Background

Dr Heather McCallum is a practising GP and Advanced Aesthetic Doctor. She has been a Doctor for 19 years and a GP for nine years. She shares her time between the clinic and a local NHS GP Surgery.

Dr McCallum’s journey started in Dundee. She completed an Anatomy Degree (BSc Hons) and Medical Degree (MBChB) at the University of Dundee, graduating in 2005. During her medical degree, she also worked as an anatomy demonstrator at the University for medical students.

After graduating, Dr McCallum spent ten years as a hospital doctor.  She was initially focussed on surgery: and completed basic surgical training and surgical membership exams (MRCS). She completed surgical posts in neurosurgery, plastics, orthopaedics and general surgery. During her surgical training she also completed a course in joint/soft tissue injection, minor surgery skills, plastic surgery skills, and advanced trauma life support (ATLS).

Laterally she switched to GP training and went on to complete hospital posts in A&E, cardiology, acute medicine, psychiatry, general surgery, palliative care and 18 months of GP placements. During her GP training Dr McCallum also completed a post-graduate diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (DRCOG) and GP membership exams (MRCGP).

GP Career

Since Becoming a fully trained GP in 2015, Dr McCallum has worked in numerous GP practices in Glasgow and Fife, and spent a year as a GP in Perth, Australia. As well as enjoying the fabulous sunshine, this job gave a great insight into how a different healthcare system works and allowed her to use her surgical skills with lots of minor operations like skin lesion and skin cancer excisions.

She has worked as a GP in Fife since 2017 and currently works as a salaried GP in a Kirkcaldy GP Practice. Her areas of specialist interest are: musculoskeletal; dermatology; women’s health; and connective tissue/autoimmune disease. However, she has a wealth of experience at dealing with all GP presentations.  As a GP she also offers various treatments including steroid injections, medical Botox, hayfever injections, and a weight loss service.

Aesthetics

In 2017, Dr McCallum was keen to expand her skills so completed a foundation course in injecting Botulinum toxin (Botox) and dermal fillers, and she started her own aesthetics business, SkinGenius Medical Aesthetics. Over the subsequent few years she completed further courses, gained experience and grew her business.

Dr McCallum now offers: anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, skinboosters/polynucleotides, chemical peels, micro-sclerotherapy for leg veins, fat dissolving injections, USS cavitation, and skin tightening treatments.

Future Plans

At present Dr Heather McCallum is the sole member of staff at the clinic, but the plan is to recruit other staff members in the near future and grow the clinic over time.
